The 1957 Topps Mickey Mantle is a very special card. 1957 is the first year that Topps standardized the size of a baseball card by making all cards 3 ½ by 2 ½ inches. This size still holds true on cards made today. This card is my favorite card that I own. In fact, it was the last card I needed to complete my 1957 Topps set. As a 10 year old boy, I remember going over to my friend’s house and seeing his dad’s baseball card collection. He had a 1957 Mickey Mantle and I instantly knew that one day I was going to own one too. Fast forward twenty plus years, I now have the complete set. This card is numbered #95 out of 407 cards. There is an interesting fact on the back of the card that there was a person who pitched 26 innings in one game! The card also notes that he won the Triple Crown in 1956 although back then they didn’t call it the Triple Crown – that term didn’t exist until year’s later. Some people claim that if you look in the background you can see a ghost. Is this a ghost of Babe Ruth? No one agrees what is there if anything but one thing I can agree on is that this is my favorite card that I own!
